An NGO has alleged to have duped poor women of Rs 1 crore in Ganjam district of Odisha, India in the name of forming Women Self Help Groups (WSHG) and arranging financial assistance for them.
Mangalu Behera, Berhampur unit head of the NGO, was arrested by the Gopalpur police.
According to the inspector in-charge of Gopalpur police station, Prgana Paramita Jena, ‘Nari Shakti Mahila Samity’ had allegedly collected money from women groups in 15 blocks of Ganjam district.
It had started operation in Ganjam district about eight months back. It allegedly duped women living in rural areas through agents for formation of WSHGs. It collected Rs 7000 from each women group for registration and financial assistance.
Sources said the agents were getting Rs 1000-2000 as commission for formation of each group by collecting Rs 7,000 from it.
